In August, I started the BLOCK Program at The Glassell Studio School, the educational arm of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The program is made up of 12 artists, including myself, and two mentors – Laura August and Francesca Fuchs.
Each week we meet with a visiting artist or curator and receive a critique. These visits (made either virtually or socially distanced due to Covid-19) have expanded my knowledge and offered so many more points of departure for my art practice. It has been inspiring and invigorating (and a little tragic at other times).
In addition to these weekly critiques, we meet for seminar (virtually) to discuss critical studies, professional practices, and our critiques. I love to read and discuss ideas in a semi-classroom setting, so I have enjoyed this component immensely.
Since starting the BLOCK Program, I have been much more conscientious of the choices I make in my art practice. I have also been fairly prolific (relative to previous periods in my studio). Of course, much of that work turned out to be studies rather than finished pieces, but the process (usually) teaches me something about the work I want to create going forward.
